STRUCTURE OF BONE Flashcards
What is spongy bone?
Open network of struts and plates
What is the orientation of spongy bone?
Tribucular bone
What is compact bone?
Relatively dense and solid
How are compact bones arranged?
Circular arrangment of bony plates (blood vessels inside feeds the bone)
Where is bone marrow found?
Medullary cavity
How is the membrane in the medullary cavity?
Thin layer membrane
What is the periosteum?
Interface between bone and nerves
Where do osteoprogenitor cells live?
Periosteum
What are the two types of bone marrow?
- Yellow marrow
- Red marrow
What is yellow marrow?
Adipocytes (fat)
What is red marrow?
Mature and immature red and white blood cells
What is the interstitial lamellae?
Fills the gaps of circular arrangement of bone
What is concentric lamellae?
Basic unit of mature compact bone (circular structure)
What are osteons?
Cells inside lamellae
What are osteons also known as?
Haversian System
