BONE CELLS Flashcards
What are osteoprogenitor cells?
Cells that can differentiate into more specialized bone cells
Where are osteoprogenitor cells found?
Stem cells found in the outer and inner layers of a bone
What do osteoprogenitor cells have an important role in?
Important role in fracture repair
What are osteoblasts?
- Bone cells derived from osteroprogenitor cells
- Bone producing cells
What do osteoblasts secrete?
Secrete collagenous material called osteoid that will later mineralize
What is the structure of osteocytes?
They are osteoblasts that become trapped in hard bony tissue
What are osteocytes?
Mature bone cells that monitor and maintain protein and mineral contents of the bony matrix
What are osteoclasts?
Large, multinucleated bone cells derived from precursor blood cells
What do osteoclasts secrete?
Secrete acids that erode the bony matrix for release of amino acids and minerals in body fluids (maintains homeostasis)
What is the difference between osteoclasts and osteoblasts?
Osteoclasts have a different origin from osteoblasts
What is osteolysis?
Removal of bone via osteoclasts
