ANATOMY AND CLASSIFICATION OF JOINTS Flashcards
What are the two types of fibrous joints?
- Cranial sutures
- Interosseous membrane (syndesmosis)
What is a sutural ligament?
Connective tissue that connects bone in the skull (not a lot of motion)
What is the interosseous membrane?
Connective tissue that connects bone in the forearm (radius and ulna)
What are the two types of cartilaginous joints?
- Primary or synchondrosis
- Secondary or symphysis
What is primary or synchondrosis joints?
Temporary cartilaginous union between bones
Where is primary or synchondrosis joints found?
In the long bone (cartilage of growth plate)
What is secondary or symphysis joints?
Permanent cartilaginous union between bones
Where is secondary or symphysis joints found?
In the vertebrae (intervertebral discs) and pelvic bone (pubic symphysis)
Where are synovial joints found?
In the hip, elbow, knee, wrist, and shoulder
What are synovial joints?
Bones are united by a capsule containing synovial fluid
Where is synovial fluid found?
In the synovial membrane
What is the most common joint in the body?
Synovial joints because they allow motion, especially the limbs
What is important about synovial joints?
Friction between cartilaginous surfaces covered with synovial fluid < than bearings covered with motor oil
What is a hinge joint?
Uniaxial and permit flexion and extension only
Where are hinge joints found?
In the elbow
