BONE DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH Flashcards
What are the four steps of intramembranous (dermal) ossification?
- Aggregation of osteoblasts forming an ossification center
- Osteoblasts become osteocytes
- Developing bone grows outward with blood vessel feeding it
- Adult bone with spongy and compact bone
What are mesenchymal cells?
Stem cells that differentiate into anything
What kind of bones develop from intramembranous (dermal) ossification?
Typical for many skull bones and clavicle
What kind of bones develop from endochondral ossifcation?
Typical for limb bones
What are the three steps of endochondral ossification?
- Primary ossification center (diaphysis)
- Secondary ossification centers (epiphyses)
- Growth plates (metaphyses)
What happens if premature fushion of growth plates occur in the hand for example?
Stops growth
How do we help grow our hand for example in length?
Epiphyses with growth plates
What is bone turnover?
The balance between osteoblast and osteoclast activity is crucial not only during growth, but during the entire life of an individual
What is osteoporosis?
Bone loss as you get older
How is bone resorbed?
By osteoclasts
How is bone deposited?
By osteoblasts
What happens when bone is resborbed by osteoclasts?
Inner bone grows outwards (width)
What happens when bone is deposited by osteoblasts?
Outer bone grows outwards (width)
