Structure Of An Atom- John England Flashcards
Chemical Bond
The attractive force that hold different atoms and ions together in compounds.
Chemical Structure
How a compound’s atoms or ions are connected.
Bond Length
Gives the distance between nuclei of two bonded atoms.
Bond Angles
Tells how atoms are oriented in space.
Hydrogen Bond
An oxygen atom of one water molecule is attracted to a hydrogen atom of a neighboring water molecule.
Ionic Bond
Formed between opposite charged ions.
Metallic Bond
The attraction between an atom’s nucleus and a neighboring atom’s electrons packs the atoms closely together.
Covalent Bond
Compounds that are made of molecules.
Polyatomic Ion
Groups of covalently bonded atoms that have either lost or gained electrons.
Formula Unit
The chemical formula of two ions that have been combined. Example - NaCl.
Nonpolar Covalent Bond
Bond in which electrons are shared equally.
Polar Covalent Bond
A bond in which electrons are not shared equally.
Empirical Formula
Simplest formula.
Molecular Formula
Tells you how many atoms are in one molecule of the compound.
Organic Compound
A covalently bonded compound made of molecules.
Polymer
Long chains of large molecules.
Carbohydrate
Sugar glucose. Gives energy.
Protein
Long chains of amino acids.
Amino Acid
Made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. Some also contain sulfur.
Hydrocarbon
When a compound is made of only one carbon and hydrogen atoms.
Alkane
Hydrocarbons that have only single covalent bonds.
Alkene
They have at least one double covalent bond between carbon atoms.
DNA
Determines your entire genetic makeup.
