Chapter 11 - Forces Flashcards
Inertia
An object continues to move in a certain direction unless acted on by an outside force.
Newton’s First Law of Motion
Matter resists any change in motion.
Newton’s Second Law of Motion.
Describes the effect of an unbalanced force on the motion of an object.
Free Fall
The motion of a body when only the force of gravity is acting on it.
Terminal Velocity
The constant velocity of a falling object when air resistance is equal to the force of gravity.
Projectile Motion
The curved path an object takes when it is in some way projected near Earth’s surface.
Law of Universal Gravitation
All objects in the universe attract each other through gravitational force.
Weight
The force of an object due to gravity.
Apparent Weightlessness
An object and all its surroundings accelerate at the same rate which makes an object appear to float.
Newton’s Third Law of Motion
All forces act in pairs. When one force is exerted, another equal force occurs in the opposite direction.
Action Force
The force exerted on an object.
Reaction Force
The force that the object exerts back.
