Chapter 7 Solutions - John England Flashcards
Suspension
A mixture in which particles of a material are more or less evenly dispersed throughout a liquid or gas.
Colloid
A mixture consisting of tiny particles intermediate in size between particles in a Solution and particles in a suspension that are suspended in a solid, liquid, or gas.
Emulsion
Any mixture of two or more immiscible liquids in which one liquid is dispersed in the other.
Solution
A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances uniformly dispersed throughout a single phase.
Solute
In a solution, the substance that dissolves in the solvent.
Solvent
In a solution, the substance in which the solute dissolves.
Alloy
A solid or liquid mixture of two or more metals.
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which the amount of each substance varies.
Decanting
Method of separating immiscible liquids by gently pouring out the less dense liquid on top.
Immiscible
Two liquids that do not mix well together.
Tyndall Effect
When particles in a colloid scatter light.
Polar Compound
A molecule that has an uneven distributions of electrons.
Hydrogen Bonding
The intermolecular force occurring when a hydrogen atom that is bonded to a highly electronegative atom of one molecule is attracted to two unshared electrons of another molecule.
Nonpolar Compound
A compound whose electrons are evenly distributed among its atoms.
Solubility
The maximum amount of solute that will dissolve in a give quantity of solvent at a given temperature and pressure.
