Matter - John England Flashcards
Chemistry
The study of matter’s composition, structure, properties, and the changes that matter makes
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space
Element
Made of only one kind of atom. Cannot be separated or broken down chemically.
Atom
Smallest unit of matter.
Compound
Made of atoms from two different elements that were chemically combined.
Molecule
The smallest unit of a substance that keeps the physical and chemical properties of that substance
Chemical Formula
Chemical symbols that are combined to represent a substance
Pure Substance
A sample of matter that has definite physical and chemical properties, either a single element or a single compound. Fixed composition
Mixture
Two or more substances that are not chemically combined
Heterogeneous Mixture
Mixed substances aren’t mixed uniformly and are not evenly distributed
Homogeneous Mixture
Mixed substances are evenly distributed and the mixture is the same throughout
Miscible
Substances that form homogeneous mixtures when mixed
Immiscible
You can see two layers in a mixture
