Structure of a Leaf Flashcards
Chlorophyll
A green substance found in some of the cells in plant leaves, which absorbs energy from light
Epidermis
A layer of cells covering a plant organ, such as a leaf or root
Palisade Layer
A tissue inside a leaf in which photosynthesis takes place
Spongy Layer
A tissue inside a leaf that contains many air spaces
Stoma
A tiny hole in the surface of a leaf, through which gases can diffuse
Xylem
Tubes made of dead, empty cells, that transport water upwards from the roots of a plant
Photosynthesis
A chemical reaction that takes place in plant leaves, in which Carbon Dioxide and water are converted into Glucose and Oxygen, using energy from light
Respiration
A chemical reaction that happens inside every living cell, in which energy is released from Glucose so that the cell can use it
Photosynthesis Equation
C⁶H¹²O⁶
