Structure & Function of Lipids Flashcards
What are lipids made of?
triglycerides
What is the function of triglycerides?
energy storage
What is the structure of triglycerides?
long polymers - lots of bonds
insoluble - don’t affect the water potential and no effect on osmosis
form insoluble droplets - hydrophobic tails on inside
What are the parts of the phospholipids?
glycerol molecule
phosphate head (hydrophilic)
ester bonds connecting glycerol to fatty acids
fatty acid tails (hydrophobic)
What is the function of phospholipids?
they form cell membranes - which controls what goes in / out of cells
phospholipid bilayer - cell membrane
hydrophobic tails face inwards
the middle is hydrophobic - it makes it difficult for polar H2O to differ into
