Structure and Function of Proteins Flashcards
1
Q
What is the primary structure?
A
the sequence of amino acids
the bonds between the amino acids are peptide bonds
this determines how the protein folds up
will have delta charges
2
Q
What is the secondary structure?
A
the long chains of amino acids fold into regions with repeating patterns
alpha helix ( coiled shape)
beta pleated sheets (zig zaggy)
peptide bonds, and hydrogen bonds
3
Q
What is the tertiary structure?
A
the final 3D resting shape of the protein
peptide bonds
hydrogen bonds
ionic bonds
disulphide bridges
4
Q
What is the quartenary structure?
A
proteins made from more than one polypeptide chain e.g. haemoglobin
peptide bonds
hydrogen bonds
ionic bonds
disulphide bridges
