Structure and Function of Plasma Membrane Flashcards
Phospholipid bilayer (heads and tails)
Allow the cell to be selectively permeable, meaning it only lets certain things in and out
The head is hydrophilic [polar] (water loving) and the tail is hydrophobic [no charge, nonpolar] (water fearing)
Cytoskeleton
Organizes the contents of the cell, enables the cell to move and change shape
Extracellular Matrix (ECM)
Influences a wide number of cellular processes including migration, wound healing and differentiation
Cholesterol
Helps your body make cell membranes, many hormones, and vitamin D, helps digest
Peripheral Protein
Support, communication, enzymes and molecular transfer in the cell (the uber)
Integral Protein
Playing critical roles in movement of molecules across them and the transduction of energy and signals.
Glycoprotein
Allow white blood cells to move around the body, initiate immune responses, and identify other cells
Glycolipid
It maintains the stability of the cell membrane and facilitates cellular recognition
Carbohydrate
Act as an energy source, help control blood glucose and insulin metabolism
