Dialogue
Conversation between two or more characters.
Flashback
A section (in a text) that is set before the events of the main story.
Future Tense
A verb that describes something that will happen in the future, e.g. ‘they will laugh’.
Narrator
The person who tells the story.
Past Tense
A verb that describes something that happened in the past, e.g. ‘they laughed’.
Present Tense
A verb that describes something that is happening now, e.g. ‘they laugh’ or ‘they are laughing’.
Sequence
The order in which things happen.
Setting
Where events take place.
Structure
The organisation of a text.
Narrative
A written story or account.
Perspective
A particular view of something.
Narrative voice
The person telling the story from their point of view.
Structural Feature
A feature that helps to structure a text.
Empathise
To understand and share someone else’s feeling.
Plot
The events in a story.
Climax
The most exciting point in a story.
First-person Perspective
The point of view of a character involved in the action of a story, using ‘I’.
Pace
The speed at which something happens.
Symbolism
The use of symbols to represent something else.
Third-person Perspective
The point of view of someone not involved in the action of a story, using ‘he’, ‘she’ or ‘they’.
Protagonist
Main Character of the play
Climax
The point in the play or scene where drama reaches the greatest tension.
Complication
The point where the action scene becomes more intense
Conflict
Where 2 or more characters oppose eachother.
Exposition
A detailed explanation of a scene or event
Falling action
The action in the scene after the climax
Foreshadowing
A hint at what will happen later in the play
Dramatic irony
When the audience knows and understands something that a character does not
Pathos
A quality of the play’s action that makes an audience feel pity for a character
Dramatic tension
The way in which suspense is developed in a scene. This is how a playwright keeps the audience interested
Inciting incident
The point at which the action of the play or scene really takes the off
Declarative
A sentence in the form of a statement
Exlamatory
An exclamatory sentence expresses strong emotion, and it ends with an exclamation mark.
Interrogative
An interrogative sentence is usually in the form of a question.
Imperative
An imperative sentence usually contains a command
