Structure 3.2 Flashcards
Homologous series
Same general formula, but differ from each other by CH2 group
Skeletal formula
Basic representation of structure formula where atoms are not shown but ends of lines and vertex represent carbon atoms
Stereochemical formula
Attempts to show the relative positions of atoms and groups around a central carbon in three dimension
Stereochemical bonds description
Bond sticking fowards from the page is a solid wedge, bond sticking behind the page is a dashed wedge and a bond in the plane of paper is a solid line
As n increases in homologous series…
So does the boiling point as the weak London dispersion forces increases with increasing mass and surface area
States at STP (alkanes)
Meth, eth and propane are gases. n=5 to n=20 liquids. n>20 solids.
Structural isomers
Compounds that possess the same molecular formula but with a different arrangement of atoms.
Primary, secondary and tertiary structural isomers
Primary - attached to one R group. Secondary - attached to two R groups. Tertiary - attached to 3 R groups
Chain isomers
Differ in the length of the longest carbon chain
Position isomers
Differ in the position of functional groups within the molecule.
Functional group isomers
Differ in the type of functional group present Different physical and chemical properties.
