Structural Design Fundamentals Flashcards
It is the pressure exerted by the wind on a surface that is perpendicular to its direction.
Positive Pressure
It is when moving air causes, a “suction effect” on the leeward side. The direction of this pressure is outwards.
Negative Pressure
It is the side which surface is perpendicular to the wind direction.
Windward
It is the side opposite the windward side.
Leeward
Surfaces that are parallel to the wind
direction can be subjected to positive and negative pressures and aerodynamic drag forces acting parallel to the wind direction.
Drag
A 3-second gust speed at 33 ft above the ground for a certain exposure and mean recurrence interval.
Basic Wind Speed, v
A structure having all walls at least 80% open.
Open Building
A building that complies with both of the following conditions:
1. Total area of the openings in a wall that receives positive external pressure exceeds the sum of the area of openings in the balance of the building envelopes by more than 10%.
- The total area of the openings in a wall that receives positive external
pressure exceeds 4 sqft or 1% of the area of the wall, whichever is smaller, and the percentage of openings in the balance of the building envelopes does not exceed 20%.
Partially Enclosed Building
A building that does not comply with the requirements for open or partially enclosed buildings.
Enclosed Building
Enclosed or partially enclosed buildings that comply with the following conditions:
1. Mean roof height h less than or equal to 60 ft.
- Mean roof height h does not exceed the least horizontal dimension.
Low-rise Building
A factor that accounts for the degree of hazard to human life and damage to property.
Importance Factor, I
Equivalent static force to be used in the
determination of wind loads for open buildings and other structures.
Design Force, F
Equivalent static pressure to be used in the determination of wind loads for buildings.
Design Pressure, p
An exposure category that adequately reflects the characteristics of ground surface irregularities.
Exposure Categories
Urban and suburban areas, wooded
areas or other terrain with numerous closely spaced obstructions having the size of single- family dwellings or larger.
