Refers to wood members that have been manufactured by cutting a member directly from a log.
Sawn lumber/solid sawn lumber
Small pieces of lumber graded into
laminating stock then glued and laid
up to form larger wood members.
Glue-laminated timbers/glulams
Material graded by visual inspection.
Visually graded structural lumber
It includes the grade, the species or species group, and other pertinent information.
Grade stamp
Lumber grade with recognized mechanical properties for use in structural design.
Stress grade
A grading by a non-destructive test, typically highly automated and takes very short time.
MSR lumber
Grading rules for commercial
wood species
Western Wood Products Association (WWPA) rules and West Coast Lumber
Inspection Bureau (WCLIB) rules.
Smaller sizes of structural lumber. Size usually ranges from 2x2 through 4x16.
Dimension lumber
Larger sizes with smallest size of 6x6.
Timbers
It is a unique material, and its proper use may require a number of adjustment factors.
