Structural and Functional classes of Neurons Flashcards
What are the 3 structural classes of neurons?
multipolar
bipolar
unipolar
Many dendrites and one axon, very commonly found in the brain and spinal cord as interneurons. Some are motor neurons.
multipolar
Where are multipolar neurons commonly found?
in the brain and spinal cord
What is the number of dendrites and axons in a multipolar neuron?
many dendrites
one axon
What can multipolar neurons sometimes be?
motor neurons
only 2 processes: one axon and one dendrite, found in special sense organs- vision, hearing, and olfaction (smell)
bipolar
How many processes extend from a bipolar neuron?
2
one axon
one dendrite
Where are bipolar neurons found?
special sense organs- vision, hearing, olfaction
Has an axon and receptive endings instead of dendrites, found in sensory neurons.
unipolar aka pseudounipolar
What are processes on the unipolar neuron?
axon and recpetive endings instead of dendrites
Where can unipolar neurons be found?
in sensory neurons
What are the 3 functional classifications of neurons?
sensory (afferent)
motor (efferent)
interneurons (association)
Where do sensory neurons carry signals?
afferent- from skin or internal organs toward the CNS
Where do motor neurons carry signals?
efferent- from the brain to effector organs (muscle or gland)
Where are interneurons?
in between motor sensory neurons and mostly found in the CNS. there is a variety of different functional types
