Myelination and Gray/White Matter Flashcards
a fatty (lipid and protein) covering that forms around the axon
myelination
What does myelination do?
increases the speed/propagation of action potentials
“sheath of schwann”
neurilemma aka neurolemma
What is a neurilemma?
“sheath of schwann” that acts as insulation for the axon of the neuron
nodes of Ranvier
myelin sheath gaps
gaps in the myelin sheath where the axon is bare, no insulation
myelin sheath gaps aka nodes of Ranvier
Mostly cells bodies, no myelination
gray matter
What is the lack of myelination in gray matter mostly due to?
chromatophilic substance
What is white matter?
axons aka nerve fibers are myelinated forming a white fatty sheath
How is gray and white matter organized in the spinal cord?
gray butterfly shaped area surrounded by white matter
How is gray and white matter organized in the brain?
cortex (bark of tree) of gray matter that surrounds white matter with pockets of gray matter (nuclei)
