What is a frame structure?
A rigid support structure which is made up of struts, ties, beams and columns
What are the three types of structure?
- Solid
- Shell
- Frame
Name two examples of shell structures?
Eggs, Coffee mug, tyre, honey comb
Name two examples of frame structures?
Roof truss, bicycle frame, veins in a leaf
What does the word rigid mean?
Stiff and won’t change shape
What type of structure is the rib cage?
A frame structure.
What are the characteristics of a strut?
It is rigid and acts in compression
What is a tie?
It is a member that acts in tension.
Give an example of a tie.
Nut and bolt.
What is a guy?
A rope, chain or wire that holds down a structure. It is designed to withstand tension.
Give an example of where a guy is used.
A tent
What is a possible weak point in a rectangular structure?
The corners.
How could the corners be strengthened?
Using braces or gusset plates at the corners.
Is a triangle or a square a stronger shape?
A triangle
What is a useful property of a frame apart from being strong?
Being light (since it isn’t solid)
