Solids Liquids Gases and Changes of State Flashcards
What are the three states of substances?
Solid, liquid, gas
What is a solid?
- A substance that has a particular size and shape.
- Its shape doesn’t change easily.
- it changes shape when force is used.
What is a liquid?
- A substance that has a size and takes up space, but doesn’t have a fixed shape.
- The shape changes easily.
- It changes shape easily when poured, it flows.
What is a gas?
- A substance that takes up space, but doesn’t have a shape.
- You can’t see it.
- It moves around freely.
Useful rhyme for remembering the differences between states?
A solid has a shape, a liquid takes one, and a gas has none.
What is a change of state?
When a substance changes from of the three states to another.
What happens if you heat a solid?
It melts and becomes a liquid.
What happens if you heat a liquid?
It evaporates to become a gas.
What happens when you cool a gas?
It condenses to become a liquid.
What happens when you cool a liquid?
It solidifies to become a solid.
What is required to change the state of a substance?
An external influence such a heat.
Is there only one type of thermometer?
No, there are several types.
The range of temperatures it covers depends upon its use. For example, a clinical goes up to 50 degrees Celsius and science thermometers up to 100.
What is a substance?
Any type of solid, liquid or gas.
What happens when you put a liquid into a container?
it takes the shape of that container.
What happens when a gas is put into a container?
It spreads out, but is contained.
What is everything made from?
Particles called atoms and molecules.
What is the pattern of particles in a solid?
Regular, touching each other.
What is the pattern of particles in a liquid?
Close together, but not necessarily touching
What are the particles like in a gas?
They are spread out and moving very quickly in all directions.
What do we use to measure temperature?
A thermometer
What is temperature measured in?
Degrees Celsius or Centigrade
