Stroke Flashcards

1
Q

Define stroke

Q

Epidural haemotoma discuss.

A

Bleeding between the skull and duramater

venous 10% arterial 90%

following falls or traumatic injury

Pressure increase is slow and

Q

How does stroke progress

A

The skull is a closed vault.
CPP = MAP - ICP
Bleeding increases intracranial pressure and puts increased pressure on brain tissue
Pressure becomes obstructive so perfusion decreases
Decreased perfusion leads to ischemia.

Q

Signs and symptoms of Stroke

Late signs of stroke

A

Headache
Nausea
Pupils, motor, face, dysphasia

Cushing triad - opposite of shock

  • Decreased heart rate
  • Elevated SYSTOLIC blood pressure (Widened PP)
  • Irregular (DECREASED) breathing

Q

Sub Arachnoid haemorrhage

Definition

A

Bleeding below the arachnoid space, usually arterial, leading to increased pressure between the brain and the tissue covering it.

Sub Arachnoid bleeds mix with CSF, pressure changes can occur quickly

Onset with a thunderclap headache

Berry aneurysm is common
