Burn depths
How do they present
How much pain
Superficial - Pink, blisters, skin in tact,
minimal pain
Deep/ Partial - blisters, moist discharge,
Pain
Full thickness - charred skin, dry or waxy, white in colour
NO pain

Adult and kids
Chemical
Water minimum 20 minutes where appropriate- do not use burn aid
consider SOT
Radiation and thermal
Water 20 on 20 off
Burn aid 20 on - MAX
Neonate - 10 mins MAX. (up to 1 month)
Considerations for treating burns
Temperature - manage exposure to hot or cold
Type of burn- water - fire - gas
Airway - trumps cooling - ICP
Fluid in burns
Saline to maintain normovolaemia (adequate blood pressure)
Perfumes brain and body
Once cooling has been done for 20 mins - next step
Cling wrap - loose over burn - cooling can resume with water or hydrogel if required.
