What does focal-neurological mean?
You can tell what part of the brain is affected by the symptoms displayed
How quickly do symptoms of stroke occur?
Within minutes
What are the two types of stroke? Which is more common?
Haemorrhagic and ischaemic- ischaemic is more common
What is the most common cause of all types of stroke?
Hypertension
What can cause ischaemic stroke?
Thrombosis, embolism, hypoperfusion (dropped BP)
When is statin therapy recommended after stroke?
After ischaemic stroke but not haemorrhagic
What other diseases or conditions can present similarly to a stroke?
Hypoglycaemia, seizure, migraine, brain tumours
What tests are used for a stroke?
CT brain, MRI (all with or without angiography)
On a CT, a dark patch indicates which type of stroke?
Ischaemic
On a CT, a light patch indicates which type of stroke?
Haemorrhagic
Where does an atheroembolism infarct in a stroke?
In the same side as the affected carotid artery
Where does a cardioembolism cause an infarct in a stroke?
More than one arterial territory, bilateral
What is a TIA?
Focal neurological symptoms which resolve within 24 hours
Is a TIA reversible?
Yes
What treatment is used immediately for ischaemic stroke?
Thrombolysis
