Stroke Flashcards
what are the three stages?
1) acute
2) recovering
3) sequelae
What are the teo kinds of acute stage patterns?
1) attack on the meridians and collaterals
2) attack on the zang-fu organs
what are the attack on meridians/collaterals patterns (ACUTE STAGE)
1) attack by wind
2) upraising of wind yang
what are the attack on the Z-F patterns? (ACUTE STAGE)
1) Yang tense syndrome
2) Yin tense syndrome
3) flaccid syndrome
What are the two kinds of recovering stage pattens types?
1) hemiplasia
2) aphasia
What are the hemiplegia patterns? (RECOVERING STAGE)
1) Qi xu with blood stg
2) LIV/KID xu
What are the aphasia patterns? (RECOVERING STAGE)
1) W-PH blocking collaterals
2) KID ess xu
flaccid limbs, numb limbs, aphasia, dizziness, tinnitus, restlessness, insomnia, flushed face, red lips
LIV/KID xu
Shortened and rigid tongue, aphasia, drooling, numb limbs
W-PH blocking collaterals (APHASIA- recovering stage)
W-PH blocking collaterals pp
RN-23, HT-5, jinjin, yuye
sudden loss of consciousness with mouth agape and eyes closed, snoring but feeble breathing, flaccid paralysis of limbs, incontinence of stool and urine
Flaccid syndrome (attack of the Z-F)
flaccid syndrome pp
RN-4/6/8
flaccid limbs, numb limbs, aphasia, drooling, deviation of mouth, sallow complexion, frequent urination, incontinence of urine
Qi xu with blood stg (HEMIPLAGIA-recovering stage)
numb limbs, sudden deviation of mouth, slurred speech, drilling, hemiplagia, chills, fever, stiffness of body, joints ache
Attck by wind (ATTACK ON MERIDIANS/COLLATERALS- acute stage)
Sudden loss of consciousness, tightly closed hands and clenched jaw, rigidity of the body, constipation, retention of urine, flushed face, coarse breathing, halitosis, irritability
Yang tense syndrome (ATTACK ON Z-F)
thin flaccid tongue, aphasia, sore/weak lumbar/knee, hemiplagia, palpitations, SOB
Kid ess xu (APHASIA- recovering stage)
KID ess xu pp
RN-23, HT-5, UB-23/52, K-3
Sudden loss of consciousness, tightly closed hands, clenched jaw, rigidity of body, constipation, retention of urine, pale dark face, listlessness, sleepiness, cold limbs, rattling in throat
Yin tense syndrome (ATTACK ON Z-F)
Sudden deviation of mouth, slurring speech, heaviness of body, hemiplagia, headache, dizziness, blurred vision, tinnitus, insomnia, dream sleep
Upraising W-yang (ATTACK ON MERIDIANS/COLLATERALS- acute stage)
Attack on the meridians and collaterals pp
LI-15/11/4, SJ-5, GB-30/34, ST-36/42, UB-60
Tense syndrome (attack on Z-F) pp
DU-26/12, jingwell points, LIV-3, PC-8, ST-40
hemiplagia pp
similar to attack on meridians and collaterals
LI-15/11/4, SJ-5, GB-30/34, ST-36/42, UB-60
definition
CVA (cerebral vascular accident)
very common, very serious. Impairment in one or more vessels in the cerebral circulation. Interrupts blood supply and results in ischemia of brain tissue
causes
thrombosis, hemorrhage, high blood pressure, HT dz
symptoms
paralysis in one half of the body, blurred vision, slurred speech, loss of consciousness, coma, sudden onset
stages
1) Acute (2 weeks-1 month): western medicine is best
2) Recovering (2 weeks-6 months): acupuncture best
3) Sequelae (>6 months): acupuncture best
Where do the majority of clots come from?
HT (embolism)
how do you determine severity
1) location
2) size
What are the 2 kinds
1) Ischemic
2) Hemorrhagic
Differentiate Ischemic/Hemorrhagic
I H
-Thrombosis -broken blood vessel
-happens during rest -happens during activity
-build up, block blow, -small artery, aneurism,
lack blood supply weak/broken blood vessel
cerebral/subarachnoid
hemorrhage
Differentiate attack on meridians/collaterals and attack on Z-F
- meridians/collaterals: failure to nourish= dev mouth, slurred speech
- Z-F: severe. yang raising+fire+W block orfices= coma/loss of consciousness
Differentiate stroke/Jue syndrome/epilepsy
Stroke JUE Epilepsy
->40yrs,history h-BP -any age -any age
-long duration, dev -short duration, -short duration,
mouth pale complexion convulsions, mania
-sequelae -no sequelae -no sequelae
-bad prognosis -ok prognosis -repeated attacks
Differentiate stroke/Bi-syndrome/Wei-syndrome
Stroke Bi-syn Wei syn
-no pain, mm -joint pain, no -no pain, mm
atrophy mm atrophy atrophy
-acute -slow onset -slow onset
-high: BP/sugar/ -arteritis -neurologic dz, MS
cholesterol, HT dz MVA
Chinese name
Zong Feng “hit by wind”
general POT
nourish KID/LIV yin, extinguish wind, clear fire, transform PH, move blood, circulate channels
which meridians to use
primary: yangming/DU
secondary: taiyang/shaoyang
ALT
1) scalp acu (motor, sensory, tremor, speech)
