Stroke Flashcards

1
Q

Visual field deficits related to LEFT hemisphere stroke

A

★ RIGHT visual field loss
★ abbreviated search pattern that does not extend to the right visual field
★ omissions noted in the blind field
★ reading into a blind field (words appear to end or stop)
★ responds to verbal cues to check

Q

Visual field deficits related to RIGHT hemisphere stroke

A

★ LEFT visual field loss
★ abbreviated search pattern that does not initiate on the far left visual field
★ difficulty with locating the start of line when reading
★ omissions noted in the blind field
★ responds to verbal cues to check

Q

Hemi-inattention

A

★ RIGHT hemisphere injury (most common)

★ asymmetrical visual search patterns
★ abbreviated search pattern that does not extend to the LEFT visual field
★ omissions noted on the LEFT side
★ random & unpredictable visual search pattern
★ difficulty conceptualizing space on the LEFT side
★ does not respond to verbal cues to check the left visual field
★ task is completed quickly and client does not check for errors

Q

Visual neglect

A

★ RIGHT hemisphere injury (most common)

★ most SEVERE form of hemi-inattention which includes left visual field loss
★ asymmetrical visual search patterns
★ abbreviated search pattern that typically does NOT CROSS THE MIDLINE
★ omissions noted on the LEFT side
★ random & unpredictable visual search pattern in the RIGHT visual field only
★ difficulty conceptualizing space on the LEFT side & does NOT elicit head turn to left
★ does not respond to verbal cues to check the left visual field or turn head and eyes to the left
★ task is completed quickly and client does not check for errors

Q

What is perceptual completion in the context of visual field loss?

A

when the brain fills in missing visual information, making the client unaware of the deficit

Q

How do clients with LEFT hemisphere injury attempt to compensate for visual field loss?

A

Use of organized scanning patterns & engage visual attention to search the environment

★ involves extending their visual scan into the right visual field
- clients may miss items due to lack of awareness as to how far they should scan
