Stroke Flashcards
What are the types of stroke?
ischemic
hemorrhagic
When is it a stroke?
acute onset focal neurologic deficit (not usually altered consciousness) cerebrovascular cause (85% ischemia)
Types of ischemic stroke
thrombotic
embolic
Types of hemorrhagic stroke
intracerebral (HTN)
subarachnoid (aneurysm)
What causes a subarachnoid hemorrhage?
rupture of blood vessels in the subarachnoid space
can be due to aneurysm or trauma
What causes an ischemic stroke?
Arterial occlusion with brain infarction
Occlusion of what vessel cause most strokes?
MCA
Unmodifiable risk factors for stroke
Age
Gender
Race
Heredity
Modifiable risks for stroke
Obesity/inactivity Carotid disease Diabetes Smoking HTN Hyperlipidemia Heart disease/a fib Heavy alcohol use Hyperhomocysteinemia
What is done for acute therapy of stroke?
Thrombolysis
TPA - tissue plasminogen activator
What is done during the recovery from a stroke?
prevention of complications
education
rehab
What is done to prevent secondary stroke?
risk factor modification
specific: based on stroke mechanism
