Stress Inocualtion Therapy (SIT) Flashcards
What is SIT?
A form of cognitive bevahioural therapy that helps people manage their response to stressful situations
What are the 3 stages of SIT?
- Concepualisation
- Skills Acquisition and Rehearsal
- Real Life Application
What happens in the Conceptualisation stage?
Client and therapist get to know each other and the client is encouraged to relive the stressful situation and analyse it
What happens in the Skills Acquisition and Rehearsal stage?
The therapist will teach the person general relaxation techniques for example positive thinking, social skills and relaxation, then they will move in to more specific training related to the thing the client finds stressful
What happens in the real life application stage?
The client and therapist do some role playing and modelling of the stressful situation and then the client tries the skills out in the real world
What did Saunders et al do?
Conducted a meta analysis of 37 studies into SIT effectiveness
What did Saunders et al conclude?
SIT is effective for reducing anxiety in performance situations and for enhancing performance under stress, effective for extreme anxiety as well as moderate or normal levels, did not depend on how experienced the therapist was
What did Jay and Elliot do?
Developed a videotape for parents of 3-12 year old children with Leukaemia who were undergoing bone marrow treatment and lumbar punctures
What was the procedure of Jay and Elliot’s study?
One hour before the treatment parents were shown a film of a model parent employing self statements, relaxation techniques and coping imagery rehearsal, the parents then practised these skills. The SIT treated parents showed significantly less anxiety, effective for acute short term stress
What did Holyroyd et al do?
Assigned 31 participants experiencing chronic tension headaches to a SIT group, biofeedback group or non treatment group. Only the SIT group showed substational improvements, SIT is effective treatment for chronic long terms stressors
What are 3 evaluation points?
- Takes a long time and needs to be motivated
- Effective for acute and chronic stress
- Expensive
