What are the three C’s in hardiness?

What is control?
Controlling what happens in their life rather than letting events control them
What is commitment?
Showing a sense of commitment to and involvement in what is going on around them
What is challenging?
See challenging situations as opportunities rather than threats
What can hardiness personality reduce?
The negative effects of stress
What has Kobasa presented?
Evidence that people with high hardiness score are significantly less likely to suffer stress related physical and psychological disorders than those with low hardiness scores
What was Kobasa’s procedure?
600 executives and managers complete a personality questionnaire and list of illness and stressful events that they experienced in last 3 years. Participants divided into two groups, those who scored above average on illness and this who scored below average
What was Kobasa’s results?
For both groups the scores for stressful events were high, those with high stress/ low illness were more likely to feel more in control have commitment and purpose and welcomed a challenge
What was Kobasa’s conclusions?
People with the characteristics that make up a hardly a hardy personality are better able to cope with stress and less likely to suffer from stress related illness
What did Bartone do?
Studied US soldiers in the first Gulf War. The higher their hardiness score the greater the ability of the soldier to experience combat related stress without having negative effects on health
