What is the Yerkes-dodson law?
Function best at a moderate level of arousal
Stress focuses our attention toward problem resolution
What two pathways are activated during the stress response?
HPA axis - secretion of cortisol
Adrenal-medullary system - secretion of norepinephrine (sympathetic nervous system)
What is the function of epinephrine?
Prompts the release of glucose and fats from temporary storage
What occurs after a threat has passed?
Cortisol levels decrease and the PNS is engaged to counter the stress response
What results from persistent exposure to epinephrine from continued perceived threat?
Damage to blood vessels and arteries, increased BP, and increase risk of heart attack and stroke
Weight gain
What is the Diathesis stress model?
Some biological, social, or psychological factor + some tigger will result in a disorder
