External anatomy of the Brainstem Flashcards
What major vessels supply the midbrain?
Paramedian branches of the basilar artery
Posterior cerebral arteries
What blood vessels supply the tectum of the midbrain?
Branches of the superior cerebellar artery
Posterior cerebral arteries
What major vessels supply the Pons?
Paramedian and short and long circumferential branches of the basilar artery
Rostral - superior cerebellar artery
Caudal - anterior inferior cerebellar artery
What major blood vessels supply the medulla?
Medial - branches of the vertebral and anterior spinal arteries
Lateral - posterior inferior cerebellar artery
Where does the olfactory nerve project into the CNS?
The Olfactory bulbs
Where does CN III exit the brainstem?
Ventral surface of the midbrain
Most rostral brainstem cranial nerves
Where does CN IV exit the brainstem?
Dorsal surface of the brainstem, just above the pons
Fibers that form this nerve cross the midline just before exiting
Where does CN V exit the brainstem?
Ventrolateral surface of the pons, at the mid-pons level
What cranial nerves exit at the pontomedullary junction?
Medial to lateral:
CN VI
CN VII
CN VIII
Where do CN IX and CN X exit the brainstem?
Lateral aspect of the ventral medulla from the post-olivary sulcus
Where does CN XI originate and exit?
The cell bodies for CN XI are located in the ventral grey matter of the cervical spinal cord
CN XI ascends through the foramen magnum and exits the skull through the Jugular foramen
Where does CN XII exit the brainstem?
Medial aspect of the ventral medulla from the pre-olivary sulcus
(groove between the olive and pyramid)
