can be disabling when stress levels are heightened

refers to move back into time when life was less stressful
developmental or maturational stressors
varies as individuals move through stages of life
situational stressors
stems from personal, family and work related
adventitious stressors
results from events such as floods, earthquakes, war, criminal activity and physical assault
socioeconomic stressors
poverty and homelessness
manifestations of the alarm stage of general adaptation syndrome (GAS):
-hypertension
-rising hormone levels
-dilated pupils
-increased state of arousal
distress
negative or unhealthy stress
