Stress
Occurs when an individual perceives a discrepancy between the demands of a situation and their social, emotional and cognitive resources to cope and adapt to the demand.
Stressor
Any stimulus that triggers a stress response.
Burnout
An adverse stress reaction characterised by complete physical, mental and emotional exhaustion, following a period of extreme emotional demand.
Stages of Burnout
- Honeymoon - satisfied and enthusiastic
- Fuel shortage - tiredness, low energy
- Chronic symptoms - exhaustion, susceptibility to disease
- Crisis - actual disease
- Hitting the wall - problems severe enough to cause serious/chronic illness.
Type A Personality
Characterised by anger, time urgency, chronic activation and multiphasia.
Hardy Personality
Characterised by control, commitment and viewing things as a challenge.
Locus of Control
External - person’s life is at the mercy of external forces.
Internal - person can control their own life.
Self-Efficacy
Belief in own ability to complete a task.
Coping
The way people manage stress.
Problem focused or emotion focused.
