Stress Flashcards
Stress Defined
Number/degree of demands vs ability to deal with then
Acute stress
Response to immediate stress
Autonomic nervous system kicks in (sympathetic)
Blood shunted to large muscles
Chronic stress
So many stressors autonomic doesnt have chance to kick in, constant fight or flight wears body down
Two main systems involved in stress
Hypothalmic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis
Sympathetic nervous system
Concepts for 2 body systems involved in stress
Feedback loop Interact with each other Influence brain and systems Influenced by genetic variations Prolonged responses of these systems damaging
Describe response of hpa axis
Stimulation of locus coerules leads to Hypothalmus releases corticotrophin releasing factor (Crf) which travels to pituitary releases adrencorttitropic hormone into blood. Adrenal gland releases stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol increases food supply. High levels break down muscle, supression of immunity.
