what is stress?
The emotional response to situations of threat. They can lead to physical and physiological symptoms.
What is a stressor?
An event or situtaion that causes stress and the symptoms on an individual. E.g - exam

Life events
Main source of stress.
may include getting married, divorce, having children, moving house.
involve change and we have to make psychological adjustment to deal with this change, and expending mental energy.
Bigger life event -
bigger psychological symptoms. Positive can have just as much symptoms as negative.
multiple life events
if more than one major life events occur together it will require more physiological adjustment.
Measuring life events - holmes and rache
Holmes and Rache 1967 - social readjustment rating score.
The list of 43 events, and the correlating number of life change units ( amount of physiological change to adapt too it )
SRRS
Social readjustment rating score - used to see whether lines is effected by stressful life events. Score of under 150 from previous year increased 30% chance.
Daily Hassles
Relatively minor but frequent aggravations of everyday life
Lazarus et al daily hassles are main causes of stress
Argues not the big life events that are main causes of stress, it is the everyday life irritations that get on top of us.
Impact health as we experience many and the effects add up, which can make us i’ll through the interaction with life events.
Ranner et al
hassles score, 17 daily hassles from 7 diff categories ( work, health or family ) and each day an individual will select the hassles they’ve experienced that day on a scale of 1/3. This is looked at everyday to combat main sources
