initiation and biological Flashcards
biological approach
more susceptible to get an addiction through genetics and numero chemistry
biological
focuses on dopamine system and genetics
dopamine reactors
nicotine molecules attach to receptors in vental tegmental area of brain when the smoker drags cig it activated the receptor which releases dopamine in the part of a brain and the nucleus causes the buzz. The smoker continues to smoke because the nicotine molecules continue to attach to VTA receptors which compels smokers
nicotine regulation model
Schater 1977
people continue to smoke to regulate nicotine in their system and activate dopamine byanitning the buss the feel to avoid withdrawal symptoms
they learnt to recognise early signs of withdrawal and smoke again at the earliest sign to being nicotine levels back up
this leads to tolerance which is a constant stimulation of dopamine receptors which reduces their sensitivity so the person needs more to get the same affect.
Schater gave light and heavy smokers a cigarette conTinung lower levels of nicotine and the heavy smokers increased their smoker more than the light smokers suggesting they were making up for the nicotine defect.
weakness 1
some smoke regularly and do not become dependant which suggests there’s other explanations than biological
genetic predisposition
genes play a role in susceptibility to starting to smoke and the maintenance
evidence - bunk et al and the twins
strength 1
various evidence to suggest the proof of this
strength 2
applicable - schater 1977 and nitocine regulation model can be applied to help people stop
strength
shows that a person can be genetically more prone to addiction
weakness 1
doesn’t explain why people start - learning approach
weakness 3
studies are quite dated to questions reliability
