Immune system Flashcards
what is the immune system
the bodies defence mechanism against antigens
negative off immune system because of stress
can cause illness as the immune system is weakened due to stress. Stress suppresses directly and indirectly
Direct effects on immune system
Cortisol produced by the HDA system and inhibits production of lymphocytes
indirect effects of immune system
stress effects life styles behaviours
links between stress and health
stress can effect the heart and blood vessels ( cardiovascular system ) due to stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline being released which causes a narrowing of the arteries which increases fatty clumps. Stress can have chronic long term and acute immediate effects on a cardiovascular system.
Pereira et alb
studied HIV positive women. women who experienced many stressful life events were more likely to develop lesions on crrvix than women who experienced less stressful events.
Strength
study shows link between stress and the impact on related conditions. Determines stress effects with numbers of health issues and not just cardiovascular
dharbar et al
subjected rats to short term stress reponse found that this stimulated immune response which makes the immune system more effective short term
weakness
negative effects of stress are mroe related to chronic stressors than acute ones. this is not yet fully understood
