the physical and emotional state accompanying the stress response
what do stressors do?
triggers physical/emotion reactions (stress responses)
what is responsible for the physical response to stress?
the nervous and endocrine system are responsible
what is the physical response to stress?
fight or flight, or tend & befriend (more common among females)
what is the general adaptation syndrome?
explains stress and disease
what is eustress? distress?
pleasant stressors and unpleasant stressors
what are three stages of the general adaptation syndrome?
alarm (initial stress), resistance (continued stress), exhaustion (prolonged exposure to stress)
in what stage of the general adaptation syndrome is one more resistant to disease?
the 2nd stage, resistance
what do people have as a criticism in regards to the general adaptation syndrome?
it assigns limited roles to psychological factors and assumes responses are uniform
what is allostatic load?
long term exposure to stress hormones linked with health problems. longterm wear and tear of stress response
what is a high allostatic load linked to?
heart disease, hypertension, obesity, decrease in brain and immune system functioning
what is psychoneuroimmunology?
study of interaction between nervous, endocrine and immune systems. relations between mental process and health
what does acute and chronic stress do?
acute enhances immune responses. chronic negatively affects immunity
what are the short term effects of stress?
colds, infections, headaches, stomachaches, allergies
what are the long term effects of stress?
cardiovascular disease, high-blood pressure, impaired immune function, cancer, type 2 diabetes, psychological problems
