Strengthening of materials. Flashcards
1
Q
What is cold work hardening? What changes does it make to the material structure?
A
Pl;asticaly deforming material causing dislocations to slip.
increase in strength but reduces ductility.
2
Q
What is grain size strengthening?
A
Reducing the size of the grains in the material structure to increase the amount of grain boundaries which reduces dislocations. Can increase toughness.
3
Q
Describe Annealing.
A
Used to increase ductility of metal.
4
Q
What are the 3 stages of anealing?
A
Recovery, recrystallisation and grain growth.
5
Q
What method is used to harden metal.
A
Rapidly quenching.
6
Q
What process follows quenching to reduce brittleness?
A
Tempering. Steel is reheated. Increases ductility.
