Alloyed Metals Flashcards
What will a thermodynamic system try to achieve?
Reach minimum energy.
What is Entropy, what symbol does it have and is a process favourable if it is negative or positive?
Level of particle disorder.
S.
Positive.
What is Enthalpy, what symbol does it have and is a process favourable if it is negative or positive?
Internal energy of a thermodynamic system.
H.
Negative.
What is the equation used to show how favourable a system is?
G = H - T * S
G = free energy of change (energy freed up by the change) H = Enthalpy change T = Temperature in Kelvin that the process took place at S = Entropy change
What are the four ways two liquids can mix?
- Complete solubility: Fully mixed forming one homogenous solution.
- Partial solubility
- Complete Insolubility e.g water and oil
- Reaction: reaction occurs and new compound created.
When mixing two materials which is the solvent material?
Material in greater proportion.
When mixing two materials which is the solute material?
Material in lesser proportion.
Under what conditions will atoms mix the best to form a substitutional solid?
If they are similar size, same crystal structure, same valence and similar electronegativity.
What is a substitutional solid?
An alloy where solute atoms replace some solvent ones in the crystal structure.
What is an interstitial solid?
A solid where the solute atoms fit into the small gaps in the solvent crystal structure.
What is an intermediate compound?
A combination of elements (metals and / or non metals)
