Ceramics Flashcards
What type of bonds are most common in ceramics?
Ionic or Covalent.
What properties do ceramics have?
High hardness and youngs modulus.
Brittle.
Do ceramics have high or low melting points?
High.
Do ceramics have high or low electrical conductivity?
Low.
What type of material do amorphous ceramics usually form?
Glass.
Defects in ceramics.
Point defects (Vacancies)
Dislocations
Pores left by processes
Grain boundaries (In Crystaline ceramics)
What is thermal shock failure?
Rapid temperature change or uneven temperature change (exterior expanding, interior shrinking)
Describe two heat treatment methods used for glass materials?
Annealing - heating to annealing point allows stresses to be relieved.
Thermal tempering - toughens the glass.
