Hallmark of a difficult strengthen the argument question is:
the correct answer may seem to be out of scope
ways to strengthen an argument
1: provide a premise (additional evidence) to add support for conclusion (doesn’t need to prove conclusion is DEFINITELY correct, just needs to make conclusion more likely than before to be true)
2: explicitly state a (controversial - i.e. something that you think you can assume but isn’t strong) assumption on which the argument depends
3. addresses an issue that could affect the validity of the conclusion
4. rule out an alternate cause and effect
5. confirming a conclusion by changing, adding or eliminating a variable
incorrect answer choice types:
1: answer that provides information that does not impact argument in any way
2: answer with information that seems to confirm the validity of a premise (because we don’t argue with premises)
3: answer that strengthens support for the wrong conclusion
4: answer that simply explains part of the stimulus (main text)
5: answer containing information that is not well connected to the scenario in the argument
6: pseudo-strengthener
7: weakens the argument as opposed to strengthens
