Detail, Inference, Application, Strengthen, and Weaken Flashcards
4 keys to RC success
1) understand passages
2) understand question
3) finding in passages the right info for answering questions
4) telling trap choices from correct answers
Steps to finding information in an RC passage
1) find the focus of the question
2) choose key words to look for (related to focus for the question) - focus on potentially capitalized words, dates, or technical words
3) locate info we need in the passage
correct answer to detail question may..
say what the passage says but in a different way
incorrect answer choices types for Detail:
1) distortion: resembles what passage says but doesn’t get it all the way right
2) stretch: go beyond what the passage says
3) speculation: say something that could be true given what the passage says or is likely true in reality but is not specifically stated by or mentioned in the passage
4) opposite: choice says the opposite of what the passage says
5) half right
6) nearby to actual answer in passage
7) matches but incorrect - restates something said by the passage but does not correctly answer the question asked
8) wrong comparisons: express comparisons of opinions, methods, or other things that do not match the passage
9) mix-up: these choices mix-up what goes with what (ex: which scientist had which idea, etc.) - don’t attempt to memorize these differences while reading just note that they exist and try to get the basic idea of what is said
EXCEPT detail questions:
four out five answer choices will be supported by the passage and one (the correct answer) will not be supported by the passage
RC inference questions:
correct answer will state something that is inferred from the passage but not explicitly stated - look for what is logically supported by the passage
inference steps:
1) find focus of question
2) identify key words/phrases to search for in the passage
3) use keywords to locate necessary info in passage
application questions:
ask us to apply information from the passage in a context outside the passage
application question strategy:
1) identify focus of the question by reading question stem
2) identify relationship between the focus for the question and the correct answer as defined by the question stem
3) Find the focus of the question in the passage and review what the passage says about it
4) find the choice that has the relationship with the focus of the question that the stem says the correct answer must have
identify the assumption RC question
correct answer will state something not stated by the passage that must be true in order for evidence in the passage to support a conclusion in the passage
identify the assumption RC question strategy:
1) find in the passage the conclusion mentioned in the question stem
2) find in the passage the evidence used to support the conclusion
3) ID choice that states assumption necessary for connecting evidence to conclusion
weaken the argument RC strategy:
1) find conclusion mentioned in stem in the passage
2) find any evidence used to support the conclusion and understand context of conclusion
3) find choice that casts the most doubt on the conclusion
strengthen the argument RC strategy:
1) find conclusion mentioned in stem in the passage
2) find any evidence used to support the conclusion and understand context of conclusion
3) find choice that supports the conclusion
