Strength Flashcards
Strength
The capacity to exert a force over resistance
Functional change
When a muscle becomes more efficient over time in order to work for longer periods of time or at higher intensities
Muscle endurance
Structural change
A muscle increasing in size (muscle hypertrophy) due to an increased load placed on the muscle over time
Dynamic strength
The ability to overcome resistance through a complete range in motion
Strength through movement
Three types of dynamic strength
Isotonic or concentric
Eccentric
Isokinetic
Isotonic or concentric
Muscle shortens under tension
While it contracts it creates movement around a joint
Eccentric
Muscle lengthens under tension
Acting in opposition to the muscle performing the concentric contraction
Isokinetic
When the muscle contractions are at a constant speed and the muscle shortens in order to create movement
Swimming
Static strength
Ability to exert resistance against an immovable force
Also known as isometric strength
Muscle doesn’t change in length
Holds resistance against the force of gravity
Strength in dance
Essential to maintain strength and balance between muscle groups
