What must be kept and contained once a dog is seized
A register must be kept and include a brief description of the dog, date of seizure and disposal
What if the dog is wearing a collar or the owner known?
A notice must be served on the owner stating that the dog has been seized must be in writing can be served by post or personally
What if the owner does not claim the dog
If the dog is not claimed within 7 days and all expenses incurred paid by the owner the dog may be sold or humanely destroyed
What if a member of public finds and wants to keep a dog
Dog is left with the finder and the police or local authority should issue then a certificate
How long must a member of the public keep a dog
They must agree to keep a dog for at least one month. After that time they can keep or hand the dog back.
What if no person claims the dog and its with the finder
If no person claims the dog as their own and the finder has kept it for at least two months the dog automatically becomes their property
What power to police and local authority officers have
The police and local authority officers have the power to seize any dog that they have reasonable cause to believe is stray
