What are the requirements for a visitor from the EU/ EEA
Provided they have a community license the can drive any vehicle their license entitles them to
What is a community license
A license issued by a governing body within any member state
What are the requirements for a visitor from a designated country
Provided their license is valid they can drive any category shown for up to 12 months
What if a person for a designated country wishes to keep driving after 12 months
Must obtain a provisional license and pass within 12 months if not license is revoked
What are the requirements for visitors from other countries
If they are the holder of a valid license or international license they can drive any category of small vehicle, up to 3.5t, for 12 months.
If the person returns to their home country for more than 185 days then come back 12 months starts again
What are the requirements for a resident from EU / EEA
Provided they have a valid license can drive in the uk until aged 70 or 3 years after coming a resident whichever is the longer period.
After this time they must obtain a valid British driving license or can exchange at any time
What are the requirements for a resident from a designated country
Provided their license is valid can drive any category shown for up to 12 months.
Should they wish to continue driving must exchange their license for a British one
What are the requirements for a resident from other countries
Same as designated however if they wish to continue must get a provisional and pass within 12 months
What is a vocational resident
Someone who is living and working legally in the uk who drives at part of their employment
Requirement for vocational resident from the EU
Provided license is valid any lorry, minibus or bus until aged 45 or for 5 years after becoming a resident whichever is the longer period
If aged 65 or over for 12 months after becoming a resident.
After these times must apply for British license
All details must be logged with the DVLA
Requirements for vocational residents from designated counties
May only drive a vehicle registered outside of the U.K and driven in by them
Only exception is a Gibraltan license holder
