He was born in Oranienbaum, Russia in 1882

His father was an opera singer and his mother was a singer and pianist. Even though he was born into a musical family, his parents discouraged a musical career for him and sent him to law school

After the director of the Ballets Russes, Sergei Diaghilev, saw Stravinsky’s Fireworks, he commissioned Stravinsky to write the music for two of his upcoming ballets, Firebird and Petrushka. These were an enormous success and really set off his career. Around the same time, he also married Katerina Nossenko
