Definition of UW?
Activities conducted to enable a resistance movement or insurgency to coerce, disrupt, or overthrow a government or occupying power by operating through or with an underground, auxiliary and guerrilla force in a denied area
UW Core Activities
Subversion Sabotage Guerrilla Warfare Personnel Recovery Intelligence Operations Preparation of the Environment (Derivative)
Denied Area
An area under enemy or unfriendly control in which friendly forces cannot expect to operate successfully within existing operational constraints and force capabilities.
Underground
A covert unconventional warfare organization established to operate in areas denied to the guerrilla forces or conduct operations not suitable for guerrilla forces.
Auxiliary
The support element of the irregular organization whose organization and operations are clandestine in nature and whose members do not openly indicate their sympathy or involvement with the irregular movement.
Guerrilla
A combat participant in guerrilla warfare.
Three types of support to UW
Indirect Support
Direct Support
Combat Support (includes all the activities of indirect and direct support in addition to combat operations)
Deterrence
is the situation in which an actor believes that gains from pursuing a certain action are outweighed by the costs that would be imposed by other actors for taking the action.
Compellence
is the situation in which an actor ceases or reverses actions because the costs imposed by other actors are or will soon outweigh the gains of those actions.

Public component
The public component refers to an overt political manifestation of a resistance
Public components are primarily responsible for negotiations with the nation-state government or occupying power representatives on behalf of resistance movement objectives
Not synonymous with shadow government or government in exile
Resistance movement
An organized effort by some portion of the civil population of a country to resist the legally established government or an occupying power and to disrupt civil order and stability.
Insurgency
The organized use of subversion and violence to seize, nullify, or challenge political control of a region. Insurgency can also refer to the group itself..
Sabotage
Sabotage is defined as an act or acts with intent to injure, interfere with, or obstruct the national defense of a country by willfully injuring or destroying, or attempting to injure or destroy, any national defense or war material, premises, or utilities, to include human and natural resources.
Subversion
Action designed to undermine the military, economic, psychological, or political strength or morale of a governing authority.
