What is a stoma
A
= diversion of the bowl or bladder contents to external abdomen due to
- diverticular cancer
- bowel cancer or obstruction
- irvadiation damage
- bowel ischemia
- incontinence
- trauma or spinal surgery

Assessing a stoma
A
- any pain in abdomen or stoma?
- Colostomy → located left iliac fossa, flusher with skin,
→ Output thick 3 Slugy (normal faeces) - Ileostomy → located right iliac fossa. Spouted so contents
don’t touch skin
→ Small bowel contents (output watery 3 green)
Inspection
- Should be red 3 moist
- Pallor cyanosis = poor blood supply (black: necrosis)
- will be odema to begin
- a cess skin around → redness, infection
palpation
- gently feel around site for tenderness
- ask pt to cough 3 feel for hernia
