What is a stoma

A

= diversion of the bowl or bladder contents to external abdomen due to

  • diverticular cancer
  • bowel cancer or obstruction
  • irvadiation damage
  • bowel ischemia
  • incontinence
  • trauma or spinal surgery

Assessing a stoma

A
  • any pain in abdomen or stoma?
  • Colostomy → located left iliac fossa, flusher with skin,
    → Output thick 3 Slugy (normal faeces)
  • Ileostomy → located right iliac fossa. Spouted so contents
    don’t touch skin
    → Small bowel contents (output watery 3 green)

Inspection

  • Should be red 3 moist
  • Pallor cyanosis = poor blood supply (black: necrosis)
  • will be odema to begin
  • a cess skin around → redness, infection

palpation

  • gently feel around site for tenderness
  • ask pt to cough 3 feel for hernia
