What are the indications for inserting a catheter?
A
- Accurate fluid balance Urinary retention - Collect sterile urine specimen - Empty bladder - instil medication - determine volume - irrigate the bladder - Keep perinal area dry - urodynamic testing comfort for terminally ill

What is the normal catheter size for a male and female
A
Female 12-14

Balloon size in IDC
A
- Use smallest balloon size possible as keeps residual urine to minimum
- The balloon should be fully inflated to recommended size
- Choose smaller size = less residual urine, less likely of bladder spasm and damage to bladder neck from the weight of balloon
- Underinflated balloons may occlude drainage holes, distort catheter tip and irritate bladder wall
Use sterile water- sodium chloride can crystalise
