Stoichiometry Flashcards
Law of conservation of mass
Atoms cannot be created or destroyed, only rearranged. The number of atoms cannot be changed by chemical reactions.
Stoichiometry
the quantitative study of the reactants and products in a chemical reaction.
Stoichiometric coefficients
the number written immediately before the atoms, ions and molecules in a balanced chemical equation
Mole ratio
the ratio between the amounts in moles of any two compounds involved in a balanced chemical reaction
Reactants
starting materials and are written on the left-hand side of the equation.
Products
the end result of the reaction and are written on the right-hand side of the equation
Limiting reactant
the reactant used up completely in a chemical reaction. Also produces the smallest amount of product
Excess reactant
the reactant leftover after the reaction, produces the most product
acid-base titration
a technique where a solution of known concentration is used to determine the concentration of an unknown solution, in this case an acid and a base react with each other to form water and a salt.
Titration
a technique where a solution of known concentration is used to determine the concentration of an unknown solution
Percent yield
the ratio of experimental and theoretical yields of product
Experimental yield
the actual amount of product you obtain when performing a given experiment, (will be given in a problem)
Percent uncertainty
fractional uncertainty expressed as a percent, ex If L = 6.0 ± 0.1 cm, its is 1.7%.
Percent error
the difference between estimated value and the actual value in comparison to the actual value
Green chemistry
the design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances
